Every mom wants certain things for their children. Most of those things are pretty universal. People often will say “I want my children to be happy” and we put that happiness up on a pedestal. However, it’s not the most important thing in the world. Don’t get me wrong; it’s certainly nice to have happy children, but if we think about it closely we realize that there are certain things we want more than happy children.
We want our children to be safe. At the end of the day, our children’s safety is probably the most important thing. Everyone wants their children to be in a safe environment and sometimes that comes at the cost of happiness. For example, you go to the beach and there’s giant sand dune. It might make your kid really happy to climb up to the top and then slide all the way down. However, it’s not the safest option. So in that case, I wouldn’t let my kid do it. Ultimately, I want my kid safe instead of happy.
We want our kids to be healthy. It might make our children happy to have ice cream for dinner every night. I can think of quite a few children that would be very happy with that as a dinner choice! That being said, it wouldn’t be very healthy for our kids to only eat ice cream. So as parents, we provide other options, more nutritional options. That doesn’t mean that they don’t have ice cream for dinner every once in a while. But sometimes, they do have to eat healthy things.
We want our kids to be active. This kind of goes along with being healthy. It might make our children happy to sit play video games all day. There
We want our children to be protected. Getting vaccines certainly isn’t fun and I can’t think of a single kid who would be happy to get a vaccine. However, as a parent, it’s important to me that my child is protected from as many possible bad outcomes as possible. So to me, getting a vaccine is more important than my kid
As parents, we want our children to be educated. There are so many different types of education. I’m not just talking about classroom education. Education comes in all different forms. There are certainly children out there who would rather not be educated. They would be happy not to learn new things. However, parents want their kids to experience life. And we want our children to experience lots of new and different things. We want them to do new and different activities and we want our kids ultimately to be well-rounded individuals. Sometimes that means that you have to learn a little bit of math and sometimes that means that you have to learn how to write. Other times that means that you need to learn things like history or science or how to play a sport. Perhaps it means that you learn how people are different from you. And these are all very educational things, but they don’t all make our children happy.
As parents, we encourage learning and different types of education. And we are going to do that because at the end of the day we want our kids to be good people. We want our kids to be well rounded. Most importantly we want our kids to learn to be independent.
We want our children to be more than happy
It’s part of life to learn that you can’t always be happy all the time. In fact, it’s actually a disservice to our children just let them be happy all the time because sometimes you have to learn how to deal with being unhappy. It’s just a fact of a life. There are going to be times where you’re not happy. There are going to be times when you’re sad or disappointed. Unless we learn how to deal with those feelings as children and how to process emotions, we’re not going to be super successful adults. So at the end of the day, parents want their kids to be things other than just happy.
