They have a safe space to have the class and she was thrilled to go down a padded slide. So it looks like we’re in it now for the long haul. Naturally, I did some digging and learned some interesting things that you may be interested in as well.

How It’s Safe
First of all, I’m not suggesting that you DIY a class for gymnastics for 18 month old. That’s just a horrible idea! What I’m suggesting instead is that you enroll your child in a reputable gymnastics class somewhere near you. My daughter does one through daycare, but you can find them in most areas because it’s such a popular sport.
There’s going to be a lot of padding. I’m not talking about half inch foam everywhere. I’m talking serious, hardcore, padding.
A knowledgeable staff will know what your child can handle and what is too much for them. They will teach your kids proper form and will work with them so they don’t hurt themselves.
What They Learn
As adults, we take a lot of things for granted, like the control we have over our bodies. We typically don’t remember what it was like to learn how to walk and we can take that for granted. Our toddlers don’t have all these skills. Essential skills like spacial awareness and balance are critical for our children to learn. We can toss them out in the real world of hard surfaces and pointy corners, or we can let them learn surrounded by padded surfaces. I like the second option better!
Our children also have to learn how to listen to the adults in the room. Nugget normally goes to daycare so she’s got extra chances to learn this, but having an adult giving directions and having the toddlers learn to follow it is HUGE. I used to teach two-year-olds how to dance and it was a similar activity. The listening at the end of the year was MILES above the listening at the beginning of the year. These skills are so worth it as your child grows.
I don’t know about you, but exercise isn’t my favorite word. However, exercise CAN be fun. You just have to figure out what’s fun for you. For me, it’s tap dancing. When I dance, it doesn’t feel like work, but somehow I always end the class out of breath. Gymnastics for
Also, some of the activities in gymnastics can be a bit scary. Do you remember the first time you were at the top of a slide looking down? Probably not, but I’m sure you could imagine how scary that would be. Gymnastics provides a safe place for toddlers to learn about courage. When they realize how fun it is to go down the slide and face their fear, they learn that sometimes scary things can be fun!
If you 18 month old has caught the gymnastics bug, congratulations on a tired child. A tired toddler is a happy toddler, right?
