Learning new technology can be an intimidating process. It doesn’t matter what your background consists of, it’s always a learning process. However, sometimes new technology has a way of making our lives easier. I got an Echo shortly after they came out. It’s been one of the best decisions I could have made for our family.

There are so many things that I love about the Echo, but most of all I love that it gives me a second set of hands. Even if you are carting in six bags of groceries and don’t have an extra hand, it’s possible to turn on lights, ask about your schedule, or find out the time without moving a muscle. I love being able to turn on music from a different room or have a Wikipedia page read to me without taking out my phone.
In the kitchen, I use the Echo for timers, reminders, and making a grocery list. Whenever I need to go shopping, I’m able to ask the Echo to add things to my list. Once I get to the store, I open the app on my phone and I’m good to go. Because my husband also has the app, if he has time to do some shopping he knows what we need without even having to check in with me. I could be home with our daughter and adding things to the list as he’s at the grocery store!
The timers are amazing and making cooking so much easier. It’s funny to think how simple it is to be able to set a timer without having to touch anything. When my hands are covered with what will become dinner, I don’t have to wash anything before setting a timer. They also added the ability to give the timers names so it’s fantastic to be able to know exactly which food item the timer is for. This has saved my butt when entertaining a few times!
The Living Room
My daughter loves music. Anything that has to do with music is the best thing ever for her. I love being able to ask our Echo to play us a playlist or station when we’re playing in the playroom. She waddles right over toward the speaker and starts to dance once she hears Alexa start talking! It’s really cute, but completely and totally practical for us as a family.
Because we have some Smart lights, I’m also able to turn on lights through voice activation. This was a life-saver when my daughter was an infant. She had acid reflux that required us to hold her upright while feeding her. We had to walk around with her a lot and most of the time our hands were occupied. Being able to walk into another room and turning on the lights effortlessly allowed us to focus on our daughter and keep our sanity without being confined to one room of the house.
We also have a Fire TV. We cut cable a while back and watch a lot of shows and movies through Amazon Prime. We have issues in our house with disappearing remotes. Somebody, I’m not going to say who likes to take the remotes and hide them. So when the remote is missing, it’s convenient to be able to control the TV by voice.
There are so many ways that this simple little gadget has helped our family and I can’t recommend it enough. And the best part is, they keep adding functionality and improving it over time! So even if there’s something it doesn’t have right now, it might have it in the future (being able to name a timer was HUGE for me and something I was thrilled they added).
Do you have an Echo? If not, what’s holding you back?
